AHEC of Summer Health Careers Volunteer Program
June 2012
Students are given a chance to explore different career opportunities in medicine by volunteering at local hospitals. Program participants learn about health issues, patient care, information on education and training for health care professions, volunteer work and opportunities, and job readiness skills. LSU Summer Scholars Program
The LSU Summer Scholars Program is an eight-week summer program that prepares selected under-represented minority students to make a successful transition from high school to the University.
Students selected to participate in the Summer Scholars Program must be:
- Be a member of an under-represented minority group
- Be admitted to LSU
- Be available to attend the program for the entire eight week summer session
- Plan to continue enrollment and graduate from the University

LSU invites students entering grades 9-12 to Tiger University, a "college-like" experience that is academically engaging and adventurous. Tiger U Courses offered include Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Freelance Writing, Tools for Effective Research, and Academic Success Strategies. Tiger U Technology Courses include Graphic Design & Digital Art, Robotics, Tech Squad, Video Game Design, and Web Design/ Flash Animation. Tiger U Specialty Couses include Forensic Science, Screenwriting, and Storyboard Animation. Non-graded and non-credit courses can let you learn without the pressure of grades. The eXploration Camp Inspiring Tomorrow's Engineers (XCITE) is a one-week residential program based on general engineering curriculum including science, technology and mathematics courses, offering fun-filled activities that allow young women to get first-hand experience of these theories in practice as they relate to the various engineering disciplines. Additionally, each program participant will have the opportunity tp experience college life and interact with women who have made successful careers in engineering. REHAMS camp (Recruiting into Engineering High Ability Multicultural Students) is a one-week residential program based on a general engineering curriculum that includes science, technology and mathematics. LSU Museum of Art Teen Guides
Training:
The LSU Museum of Art needs help from volunteers to make their experiences fun and, at the same time, keep the art safe. There are five days of planning, training, making props, and practice "touring." The Teen Guides are then asked to donate at least one day per week for the majority of the summer to help with the campers. LSU Performing Arts Academy
The LSU Performing Arts Academy is offering two pre-college music programs for outstanding young musicians. Both programs are designed for students entering grades 9-12.
- Honors Chamber Winds Camp - June 10-15, 2012. This camp is for outstanding brass, wind, and percussion students. An audition is required.
- Opera Camp - July 22-28, 2012. This camp is for talented young singers. An audition is required.

Summer Geoscience Field Trips

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of New Orleans is offering
an opportunity for minority students to participate in a summer geoscience field trip as part of the
UNO-EES Minority Awareness Geoscience Program. A trip is planned to explore
the deltaic and upland regions of Louisiana. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience
in science, meet people with common interests and explore new environments. We are seeking highly
motivated students who are interested in the earth science and enjoy exploring their natural world.
Student applicants should be African American, Native American, Latino or of another group that is

The Louisiana Youth Seminar was established in 1971 as a summer leadership camp for high school students. Every year the Seminar is held at Louisiana State University for one week in July. Tulane Science Scholars Program
July 9 - July 20, 2012
The Tulane Science Scholars Program is a selective program for high school students who have exceptional talent in the sciences and mathematics. This summer session will focus on the field of Neuroscience. The program has a $300 fee, which may be waived in cases of financial hardship. Applicants should currently be in the 10th or 11th grade and have a strong interest in science and math. A maximum of 24 students will be selected for the program and will be based on (1) student essay, (2) teacher recommendation, and (3) school transcript. Pre-Collegiate Summer Scholars

Grambling State University High Ability Program

The High Ability Program at Grambling State University is an exciting enrichment program for high school juniors (rising seniors) who have exemplified outstanding academic standards throughout their high school years. This program will include the opportunity to earn six college credit hours in English, mathematics (calculus) or a science. The forms needed for selection for this program are: a completed GSU admissions application, ACT score of 20+, 3.3+ gpa, essay, and survey. Admission to the program is limited and will be awarded to those students who are best qualified. All selected students will receive tuition, room and board, and books without charge. Xavier University Summer Science Academy
- SOAR1 (Stress On Analytical Reasoning) is a challenging approach to verbal and quantitative reasoning. This class is for rising seniors (current juniors) interested in science/ health-related careers. Students will attend class (M-F) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., July 9 - July 31, 2012. MIND Alliance Project in Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM) Summer Enrichment Institute

Unveiling the opportunites in science for students with disabilities. Students participate in ACT training, career assessment & exploration, disability awareness, along with a focus on math and science. Field trips to Stennis Space Center and Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Obervatory (LIGO) are scheduled. There is a stipend of $250 upon completion of the activities by August 2012. Sankofa Academy Program

This program is an academic empowerment program designed to enhance students' critical thinking skills, mathematics skills, English skills, and reading comprehension skills. The courses prepare students for future high school or college studies. The enrollment for the Sankofa Academy Program at Southern University (SUBR) is 100 students.
